2012 Light Tackle Tournament Results

(Click on image to expand and read)

It was a great tournament, just needed more fish.  Seas were mostly calm and temperatures mild.  Well, sailfish prefer that anglers get cold, soaked, and bounced around.

Owners, captains, mates, and guests had a good time.  For a write-up, click on Ed Killer's article from the Stuart News above.  For more tournament details, including the real-time results, go to our home page.  For an album of a couple of hundred pictures, go to Stuart Sailfish Club Pictures from our home page.  Stuart Sailfish Club Pictures.

Fifteen boats carrying forty-two anglers set out on beautiful seas Nov. 3 for the annual Stuart Sailfish Club Members Tournament.  This is a team tournament open to members only and includes competition for billfish release, kingfish, dolphin, and wahoo.  For meat fish, only fish over 30 inches were weighed.

The awards dinner was traditional with hamburgers, hot dogs (chef Dave Powell), and plenty of sides, appetizers, and deserts, many provided by members.  A highlight was deep fried fish caught during the tournament (chef Andy Kubiak) and grilled fish with DaveP’s famous salsa.

Fish were scattered, and anglers ranged between the 40 line and the 200 line.  A dozen sails were released, and meat fish caught included not only tournament fish, but also other tasty options including tuna.

MY OTHER HONEY ENTERTAINS OUT-OF-TOWN GUESTS

L-R Ken, Terry, Nick, Mate Tony Ettari, Capt. Peter, and SSC Member, Dave Mills

Capt. Peter Morello generously donated his boat, My Other Honey, for auction for a half day fishing trip to benefit the SSC college scholarship program.  The fortunate recipients included Ken from St. Louis, Terry from Carlyle, PA, and Nick from Reston, VA.

Yesterday, Peter took them out...and...he found fish.  They caught 11 dolphin, jumped off a sail, and boated a wahoo.  Lost a wahoo at the boat trying to flip in a gaffer, and released a weehoo…all by 10:00A.  Ended up with 14 dolphin, and came in at 1:00p.

One of the guys asked, "Not having fished here before, we don't have anyway to gauge this...is this a normal day, a slow day, or a good day?"

Capt. Peter's reply, "on My Other Honey, it's about normal."  Mate Tony's (under his breath) reply,"Right!"

Whatever kind of day it was, it was terrific!

2ND ANNUAL CHARTER MANIA 2012

Another good one!  Six SSC Member Charter Captains opened up their boats for interested people to tour and learn about their trips.  Then each offered a charter for a drawing and auctioning.  Proceeds benefit our High School/College scholarship program for students who will be studying for professions in the marine industry.

Boat Captains are James Ewing (boneshakercharters.com), Jim Hardee (challengesportfishing.com), Patrick Price (daymakerfishinig.com), VJ Bell (seacheckcharters.com), Peter Morello (stuartflsportfishing.com), and John Millroy (Hobe Sound Island Charters).  These guys represent some of the best known and most successful captains in the southeast US.  See our Charters page on our web site for information and links to these great fishing opportunities.

And there was something for everyone, face painting, vendor booths, food, music, raffles, and an auction.  Daymaker Charters even brought in a bounce house for the kids, and a bar for the adults.  If you made it this year, you had a good time.  If you didn't make it this year, you won't want to miss it next year.  See Stuart Sailfish Club Pictures from our home page for about 50 pictures of fun.

Many thanks to our boat captains and owners who generously donate their time, fuel, bait, and boats for this fun and worthwhile event.  And thanks to co-chairs Char Griggs, Dave Powell and their many volunteers for making this fun event a success.

Dave Powell Celebrates 70th

For his BIG BIRTHDAY, wife Joyce gave Dave a day of fishing on the Challenge.  And a grand day it was ... perfect weather and calm seas, with two of the finest captains on the East Coast, Jimmy Hardee and VJ Bell teaming up sharing captain/mate duties to assure Dave's success.

Well, it all paid off as pictures indicate.  VJ found the fish, Dave got it to the boat, and Jimmy got it in.  And, a fine fish it was.  Dave generously donated it to the boat, and Jimmy promises it will provide more bait to thrill more champion anglers in the future.

Congrats, Dave, and many more!

2012 JUNIOR ANGLER TOURMAMENT WINNERS

After weather cancelled last year’s 2011 Junior Angler Tournament, this year’s event was a real treat.  67 junior and pee wee anglers fished on 18 private member boats and on the Safari.  The weather held out (mostly) until weigh in time (naturally), and then soaked many anglers and their fish.  But, raffle items, trophies and a great meal by Sonny’s BBQ made it all just fine.

Fish bent a lot of rods, with Bonita leading the way, along with sharks, blue runners, remora, and others.  Few anglers went without a catch of some sort.  The weigh station was overwhelmed, and just at the time the rain blew in!  Thanks to some observant volunteers who came to the rescue helping to get trophies to deserving anglers.

While many anglers were “veteran Stuart Sailfish Club Junior Anglers”, several were new, and we were thrilled to have 20 kids representing Florida Sheriffs Ranch from as far away as Bradenton, and many of them were fine fishermen.  Thanks to them and their staff for getting up early and on the road by 4:00 AM to make it on time.
There were not fish to be counted in every category (where were those sailfish, cobia, and sheepshead), and winners were:

SMALL BOAT TOURNAMENT....FINALLY

(See many more pictures by Allison Wigley on SSC Pictures from our Home Page)
After two weather related delays, the Small Boat Tournament happened Saturday, the 14th!!!  And, a sporty day on the water it was after all.  Southeast winds to 15Kts delivered seas of 3-4 with a few 6 footers thrown in to keep anglers on their toes.  But tourney co-chairs Michael Fogel and James Robinson were not to be deterred this time, and some skilled (and maybe a little lucky) anglers challenged scattered fish successfully.  Committee Boat handler Char Griggs and Weigh Master Jim Weix found people to talk with and some fish to weigh.

Junior Angler Mark Smith released his 1st sail, but couldn't count it as it jumped on his kingfish rig which was not rigged with a circle hook.  Congrats anyway, Mark.  And, Bill Whippen presented Jody Robinson with a Polly Whippen award explaining that there had been a tie for the award from the Ladies Tournament.   Congratulations Jody!

Winners of cash and awards were as follows:

SAILFISH RELEASE
Reeling 2 Go - Capt. James Robinson.  Guest angler Johnny Wise released the 1st one at 8;44 and Capt. Robinson got the 2nd one at 10:33.

MEAT FISH
Clean-N-Simple -Capt. Barry Berhoff.  Angler Craig Stevens brought in a 25.02lb. bull dolphin.

And, this was certainly Capt. Barry's day, as he won the $700 Added Entry Level and the Fuel Raffle of $500.

Congratulations to all.   And, thanks to our other participants and especially our sponsors.

SBT Captains Meeting

The Captains Meeting came off as planned at Manatee Island with raffles, vendors, anglers, guests, and fun.  The location and food provided by Manatee Island even provided a dunk tank, but it remained unused as we fell short of volunteers to be dunked.  (There was no limit to the suggestions for dunkees!)

See an album of great pictures by Allison Wigley in Stuart Sailfish Club Pictures off our Home Page.

Weather did not cooperate for fishing, however, with a forecast for 15K winds and seas of 5-7 ft.  The fishing has been postponed to a more appropriate date to be named later, likely in July or August.  Stay tuned (Email, Web Page, and Facebook) for plans and join in with us.

2012 SSC Ladies Tournament

Top Lady Angler Jody Robinson

The weather postponed Stuart Sailfish Club’s Ladies Tournament was fished Sunday and the Ladies could not ask for better day. Ladies Tournament Experiences Weather Delay

The wind gods blew and 5-6 foot seas chased the fishing off until next Sunday, May 20.  But, the Captain's Meeting was a big success, fun for a couple of hundred of us.  Go to Stuart Sailfish Club Pictures on our home page to see about a hundred pictures of good time.

Fishing will be next Sunday, roughly the same schedule that was planned for last Saturday, including the Award Dinner.  Still time to sign up.  Download a registration form from the web site, fax it in, and join the fun.  If you are already registered, contact the committee boat at 7:00AM as you leave the inlet to let them know you are fishing as planned.

The office will be closed this week as Char will be on vacation.

For any questions regarding the tournament, contact tournament Co-chairs, Tina Fenniman (772) 260-1999 or Jodi Fogel (772) 708-8315.

Chowder Cook Off - Great Fun

Competing with all the Saturday Easter egg hunts was tough, but for those who chose seafood chowder over boiled eggs, well, from our perspective, no competition!  Many thanks to our our many merchandise vendors who braved the wind to set up tents and displays.

The competition for top chowders was keen, and this "judge" was looking for the box to check off for "all of the above".  But, alas, the event attendees who paid $3 for a bowl and the right to vote chose their top choices:

Top Creative Chowder - Rocky Carbia.  Rocky, in addition to being a fine cook is also the Captain of the Safari Fishing Charter Boat.  www.safari-1.com.  Accepting for Rocky is Rocky himself.
Top Conch Chowder - The Restaurant Gettin Crabby here in Port Salerno.  gettincrabby.me  Accepting for Gettin Crabby is Meg Arbour, co-owner.
Top Seafood Chowder - Cindy Mumford, member of the Stuart Sailfish Club.  Accepting for Cindy is Cindy herself.

Other Cook Off contestants who certainly deserve Honorable Mention include:

Jesse Rehe - Stuart Sailfish Marina and Finest Kind Offshore Tackle
Marty Romstadt - Finest Kind Offshore Tackle
Dave Powell - President, Stuart Sailfish Club

Congrats to all for their fine jobs.

2012 President's Message to SSC Members

February, 2012
First, many thanks to last year’s Officers, Board of Directors and all of those club members who volunteered during 2011 to make the year one of our best.  We held fun tournaments, and new and different social activities.   Our general meetings were open to the public and we had great attendance at our “docktail” parties and gained new members.  We hosted two entirely new general meeting formats.  The BOD decided in our difficult economic times the Club needed to focus on supporting our local marine industry.  So in September we had our first “Charter Mania” to support the local charter fishing fleet.  It was a huge success with over 250 in attendance.  Feedback from the charter owners and captains was very positive with requests for us to host another Charter Mania in 2012.  We also held a joint general meeting with the Corinthian Yacht Club at their facility. Experimenting with new venues has added new interest in the club.  From each of our tournaments we learned something new:  Ladies - how to spoil them;  Small Boat - try a new venue with new sponsors; Junior - weathered out; Members - cooking our own fish was a blast for all and finally our Light Tackle -  the most financially successful in many years.

Our achievements can only be accomplished with the generous support of our sponsors.   For this, we all thank them.  They are listed throughout this directory and we encourage all members to support their businesses.

Our challenge to each member, director and officer for 2012 is to help the club grow our membership and tournaments while maintaining our culture of family fun and well-run tournaments.  For 2012, a professional event planner will supplement efforts of our tournament committees.  The cost of this service has been underwritten by several members.  Co-chairs of all 5 tournaments are hard at work.  The challenge the Board and Officers has set for ourselves is for 2012 to generate income that will exceed our expenses by $20,000.

We encourage all members to get involved in our tournaments, docktail parties, and general meetings.  Send in your stories and photos for our web site, and please give us your feedback.   Bring your friends to the public events as potential new members!  The club belongs to all of you and I encourage all of you to be involved.

Sincerely,

 Dave Powell

Annual Meeting and Awards Dinner - Jan. 27

Club president Dave Powell called the meeting to order at 7:00 pm as about 80 members & guests prepared to enjoy another fine dinner at Mariner Sands Country Club.  He opened with a short “state of the union” address highlighting achievements of the Club and many of its individual members.  These included:

·       Char Griggs, Cindy Mumford, and Sarah Wichers for running a fine Ladies Tournament, and their great success with a changed format to spoil our ladies.

·       James Robinson & Sherry Simmons for Co-Chairing the 2011 Small Boat Tournament, again new format and captains meeting and party at the Manatee Island Grill.

·       Betty Olliges for her years of work in the Junior Angler Tournament.  This year she raised money, and organized the event, only to have it cancelled due to the weather.  Most sponsors said to just keep their sponsorship funds and items to 2012.

·       Char Griggs & Cindy Mumford for 16 years of running the Light Tackle Tournament.  Many changes and enhancements this year will assure successes in the tournament format in the future.

·       SSC took on new concepts of docktail parties, Charter Mania and Double Hooker all successful events.

He announced that the Chowder Cookoff originally scheduled to take place during the Light Tackle Tournament will be held Saturday, April 7th.  Andy Kubiak informed us all that he would be winning that contest.

1st Vice President, Curt Croteau briefed us about the Corinthian Anglers Club/Stuart Sailfish Club tournament taking place from Feb. 18 to Mar. 18, a new and unusual concept for SSC members  and holds out great promise.  Contact Curt or Char for details, and come out and fish.

2nd Vice President, Michael Fogal explained that SSC would benefit by using an Event Planner in 2012 to run many of our tournaments and events.  Lindsay Nickerson has been selected.

Michael, as chairman of the nominating committee, announced that nominations for 2012 Board of Directors included all that have served in 2011.  Further, that all officers had agreed to stay on if elected.  A majority vote prevailed.  They are:
Dave Powell - President
Curt Croteau – 1st  VP
Mike Fogel – 2nd VP
Dave Mills - Secretary
Geoff Mayfield  - Treasurer
Andy Kubiak  - Past President
Tim Bausch
Butch Bayley
VJ Bell
Fritz Grell
Erika Long
Cindy Mumford – Tournament Coordinator

Glaspey includes a large trophy that stays in the Club office, and a smaller replica that goes to the recipient.  Vance presented the award for the 2011 winner to Mike Resch.  Accepting the award for Mike who was in Mexico fishing (imagine that), was his father, Mr. Resch.  Mrs. Glaspey was present to see this 1st years award presentation.
