Congrats to anglers & winners of the 2014 Members  Tournament. The weather held and 3-4 ft. rolling seas were quite fishable. Air temp of 75 and water temp of 78 were just about perfect. Committee Boat announcer, Beth Davis called lines in at 8:00am and out at 3:00pm. Weigh Master Jim Weix opened the scale at 3:00. Then, the skies opened up and tried to drown everything, including the fish, throughout the balance of the evening.

Chefs Dave Powell, Darryl Herbert, and Berto Vasquez did a great job on the grill with hamburgers, hot dogs, and dolphin (donated by anglers of the day). Tish Gelineau and Margaret Dyer did a top notch job shopping for, cooking, and organizing sides and desserts. Some food was left over, but not a single bean of Joyce Powell’s home baked beans. A special THANKS to the many volunteers who came out Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday to put up tables & chairs, hang banners, sell tickets, pass out angler bags, clean up and all the other activities required to make a tournament happen. They included:
Erika Long                                  Betsey Riley          Skip Lascell
Darryl Herbert                           Berto Vasquez     Brett Schaming

Jim & Laura MacBean              Beth Davis            Jim Weix

(Hope I didn’t miss anyone!)

CONGRATULATIONS TO STUART SAILFISH CLUB MEMBERS

Outlaw

One of our member tournament boats is off to a great start this sailfish season. The Outlaw, owned by Lifetime Member Neil Subin and the crew, mostly SSC Members, turned up winning two early season major tournaments against some very worthy competition.

They fished the prestigious Fall Sailfish Classic in New Smyrna Beach October 16-18 and released 13, narrowly beating the Right Hook (non-member boat) on time. Captains Neil Subin and Ian Wichers shared (switched  off) between captain and angler. The balance of the crew included Tom Wichers (another Lifetime Member), Brian Schmidt, Pat Price, and Marshall Busha.

The following weekend they fished and won the Capt. Ed Dwyer’s Billfish Classic at Cape Canaveral with 10 releases, 9 caught the first day. Same crew, only Ian Wichers was Captain for the entire event. It was Ian’s first major sailfish tournament win as Captain. And, Tom Wichers earned the Top Angler Award for the tournament.

Congratulations to all on a fine job and a great start to the tournament season.

2014 LADIES TOURNAMENT SUPPORTING SALTWATER SISTERS

Saltwater Sisters and their dolphin caught on Instigator II today!
Saltwater Sisters and their dolphin caught on Instigator II

Nearly 50 women participated in the Ladies Tournament supporting Saltwater Sisters to raise money for local breast cancer patients, but the meaning in the numbers is even greater.  The Tournament, hosted by Stuart Sailfish Club, was held on October 24 -26 and raised more than $40,000, with profits to benefit Friends in Pink, Windsor Community Angels and the Stuart Sailfish Club Scholarship program.   Friends in Pink is a nonprofit organization that assists local breast cancer patients who are uninsured or under insured.  Windsor Community Angels provides local uninsured women with free mammograms.

Event Chairperson Margaret Dyer couldn’t be more pleased with the final results.  “We are thrilled with the turnout for this event and most especially with the money raised,” she said. “We will be able to help people in our community who are dealing with the devastating illness of breast cancer.  Because the money will benefit Friends in Pink, we know it will go directly to patient care and treatment.” Friends in Pink will be celebrating their 10 Year Anniversary in 2015 and they have already helped more than 250 local men and women survive breast cancer.

The Tournament, which was open to the public, was unique in that there were several fun elements to the event.  A Pre-party “Tie One On”, took place October 1 at Pirates Cove Resort and Marina.  The Tournament Captains Party was held on Friday, Oct 24 at the Resort and fishing took place on Saturday and Sunday of that same weekend, beginning with a boat parade and water gun fight.  4-6’ seas challenged anglers on Saturday, but Sunday’s anglers saw much calmer seas. The event culminated with an Awards Ceremony Sunday evening.  The event also included a live auction, silent auction and raffles.  Unique art items, Bahama trips and fishing gear were some of the items up for bid.

“We received an abundance of praise for a very well run event,” said Dyer. “Comments like “it looked like a 100 boat tournament”, “the tournament was run like a well-oiled machine” and “will fish again next year” were heard throughout the weekend.  We cannot thank our sponsors enough; without them we could not have put on such a first class tournament.  Without the participants, we could not have raised so much money for the cause.”

Sponsors of the event included Ted Glasrud Associates Inc., Fogel Capital Management Inc., Floridian Charters, American Custom Yachts, Hinckley Yacht Sales, Sailfish Marina of Stuart, Pirate’s Cove Resort & Marina, HMY Yacht Sales, Windsor Imaging Group, Global Neuro & Spine Institute, Scripps/TC Palm, Coast 101.3, J Weiss PR, American Custom Yachts, Bausch American Towers, Geoffrey Smith Galleries, Lewis Marine, Shurhold Industries, TentLogix, Treasure Coast Propeller, Whiticar Boat Works, A&J Boatworks, Ace Marine Diesel, Celedinas Insurance, Charles Schwab, Dorado Marine Electronics, Fish Heads of Stuart, Diamond Fishing Products, Tequesta Insurance Agency and Marine Max.  Many local donors graciously contributed auction items that resulted in very successful auctions.

Joe Lehner       Bonnie Powell     Ed Killer    Curt Whiticar
Jim Dragseth     John Whiticar      Capt. Ray Parker-Deceased
Then, Dave delivered the following message to the membership:
In reading through some of the historical documents recently as we prepared for our 60th anniversary of the LTT, an article written by Jan Fogt for the Stuart News in 1972 caught my attention. It starts out as follows:
"Dr. Edgar Ernst, out-going president of the Stuart Sailfish Club,
blasted the community’s officials, businessmen, and individuals which profit and do not contribute to the Club’s winter and summer Fishing Tournaments. The event was the Club’s annual awards and installation dinner at the Captain’s Quarters Restaurant.
Dr. Ernst said that in 1958, 15 realtors maintained sustaining memberships in the club and in 1972 there was only one. They said let the Club handle it while the entire community sat back and profited from the tremendous public relations job the Club’s tournaments do in generating income to other businesses in the community. It is ridiculous that a private club with a limited treasury should have to pay for awards and citations for more than 1000 vacationers."
Well, this is definitely NOT my message of today, for as you heard a little earlier, we have many very generous and loyal supporters from our business community who contribute 10’s of thousands of dollars to sustain this Club, and without their support, this prestigious 75 year old club would cease to exist.
But, we clearly need more involvement and support from many of our members. As is often the case in clubs, less than 5% of our members carry the load for the other 95% of the members. We have several excellent and dedicated volunteers. But, after a while, they get tired and would like to just show up and enjoy the events and fish in the tournaments like others do. Additionally, the board and officers need new blood and new ideas.
It’s YOUR CLUB! We encourage you to get more involved, volunteer to run a tournament, serve on the board, be an officer, serve on a committee. If you feel the club isn’t what you want it to be, or doesn’t offer you what you want out of it, get involved and change it.
On the tables are sheets listing some of the things the Club needs. Please sign up for something you would be willing to do in the coming year. Leave them on the table and we’ll pick them up. We’re looking forward to working with you in the coming year.
Following the business meeting, Andy Kubiak, Sarah Wichers, and Tish Gelineau presented awards to 2013 member winners.
